But, who? That is my question! Weinman or the person who copied his work? If not that, what is so great about the reverse? Chris
Mercanti.......Chief engraver at the mint from 2006-2010. Sculptor par excellence.....a host of designs to his credit, and I believe this one was one of his best.
Ken, not intending to demean Mercanti or Weinman, but don't you think it would have been appropriate for PCGS to specify the intent of their insert? Chris
Love silver eagles, all of them, not sure what the pop of pr70s are, but its allot, ebay is flooded, I have some orderd, not pr70 however.
So nobody can explain the Magnum Opus label? All I could find out is that there are 600 of them. Apparently, PCGS made up a whole bunch of special labels for 2019.
Agreed Chris. There should have been some sort of announcement made for this type of slab but danged if I can find one.
When I bought the coin, I asked what the estimated value might be in 10 years. The dealer said that they sold a similar coin back in 1993 (the coin was a PR70DCAM) and in 2005 it sold for $90,000. Evidently this is the first time PCSG has rated a Silver Eagle Magnus Opus...meaning the highest rating they can give. We shall see!
More than likely it is just a private label for a bulk submitter. I'd say your dealer is lying. I don't think any silver eagle has ever sold for that much. If one did it was probably a 1995 W PR70DCAM which is a completely different item, and they couldn't have sold one of those in 1993.
As suspected..........large dollar appreciation for these (works of art) are little to none. Common issues in perfect form...........
If the design is considered his best work, wouldn’t any of the silver eagles qualify for magnum opus status. The mint is the one that produces the coins and they can’t determine what coin is going to be a proof 70.so how does it get the designation of magnum opus. The Sheldon scale only goes to 70 so how does the magnum opus exceed the Sheldon scale. Every silver eagle should be gradeded magnum opus if you are strictly going off the design.
