There was a 1922 no D cent and there was no Lincoln cents made at the Philadelphia mint so it safe to assume that something similar can happen with the 2017 Lincoln cents. The picture below is a 1922 no D Lincoln cent.
The mint mark is NOT hand punched anymore so no chance to “forget it”. The MM is part of the master hub so when new dies are made they are complete. The 1922 weak D was just a weak striking problem the NO D were a forgotten MM die. It just can’t happen the same as it did back in the day. Reed & Sparkles.

Not the 22 No D was the result of a very worn die that was lapped to the point the mintmark was completely removed. If it was a forgotten mintmark, coins would exist from early die states with sharp features but with a missing mintmark. Such coins do not exist.
