I know they did this dollar for special reasons but if the dollar coins were not popular, just wonder why they kept it going.
Well because Congress authorized them. The bulk majority of these are held in storage in balistic bags.
Picking and Grinin is right. Authorized by congress, so they must be produced. Same thing with half dollars, really.
More than authorized, required that they be struck... note the shall https://www.congress.gov/110/plaws/publ82/PLAW-110publ82.pdf
We are lucky that they are still worth one US Dollar. These, the presidential and innovation dollars are worthless as collectables, IMO.
I have all of the Presidents but only the first Innovation and it will stay that way. No way am I’m starting to add to modern coins, not with what the mint produces.
Yes I did read that and appreciate it. Just thought they would have put it on another popular coin. But I do understand the why. Thank you. It’s beautiful really! But they don’t keep it because I say it’s beautiful. Ty!
Me too CN. I got one of the innovation dollars and that was the end of my new coin purchases. With the USPS printing wallpaper and the US Mint making ballast a person can't keep up mentally or financially.
I hear that. I quit stamps many years ago, just before they went to self stick. Any modern coins, I can pass on them. All my efforts go into silver and gold coins nowadays.
You may have seen this before. I counted up the stamps issued by the USPS over time from the first issues. You can see how greedy they are. And how difficult it would be for the typical collector to keep up. The first two lines cover more than 10 years each. Then it is ten year increments. USPS Stamp Issues 1847 to 1899 293 1900 to 1949 693 1950 to 1959 152 1960 to 1969 247 1970 to 1979 408 1980 to 1989 643 1990 to 1999 931 2000 to 2009 1065
The postal service currently and has for a long time, been under the mistaken view that collectors are the reason for all of the new issues. Most stamp collectors gave up trying to keep up with the new issues. My office was no different, I had about 9 or 10 collectors that brought in their stamp collection when they had to mail a package. They asked us how much it would be cost. We told them and they thanked us before placing the correct amount on the package using stamps only, from their collecting albums. They they handed us the package and we would place a zero postage label and cancel the stamps. That way they had a tracking number. It’s just too much.
I just mailed some Christmas cards. I noticed one card was short by 2 cents. The clerk put the extra postage on. She asked what I was doing and I told her getting rid of old stamps. I do it all the time. A Presidential dollar is always worth a dollar. But, you can't sell stamps for anywhere near face value. Nobody wants them.
