2011 D Olympic Silver Quarter

I came across this quarter and wonder if anyone could tell me more about it? At first I thought it was a proof coin but it has a D mint mark? We’re coins like this minted in Denver?

it also weighs 5.78 grams which leaves me to believe it isn’t silver but just treaded somehow?

 

Chrome plated most likely,still a quarter.

 

I saw a on line post where someone was making silver rings from any of the 2011 5 coin series minted in San Fran. It looks more silvery than chrome p. No clue!

 

To light to be silver,the San Francisco mint does mint silver proofs which is probably what the person is using.

 

These were platinum plated by many after they left the Mint.

 

platinum plated. I don’t know why anyone would go to the trouble? 2011 Proof coins were minted in sf but plating a coin with a D mm has me scratching my head.

It’s plated and was produced at the Denver mint in 2011. That’s why you have a “D” on the coin.

Some were even gold plated.

 

How come nobody ever brass plated them... seems more honest.

Thanks for the link. I purchased several books with all of the state quarters in uncirculated condition for my g kids a few yrs ago. Tried to get them interested in coins! Maybe they weren’t shiny enough?

 

Well, Silver and Platinum, Copper and Gold.
Weren't these sold in 5 coin sets?

 

I remember the ads for these plated sets. They were for the 5 coin sets for each year.

 

Thats right each set plated in a different metal.

 

The ones I saw were being made into rings and were from a five coin SF set. Your choice at $100 ea. How to stretch your money!
