Greetings everyone, I cracked open a mint roll of hot springs quarters and found this one inside. It is the only one I found and can't really come up with an explanation for it. By the size of the marks it looks to be the reeding from the edge of a coin minted into this one in 2 different spots. All thoughts and suggestions are welcomed! Thanks! J
That is a cool find. It does look like a piece of a reeded edge. Does it look as if its embedded into your coin, or is it actually part of the coin?
I think you're onto something. It doesn't look like post mint or die chips. High/low "extra leaf" guy is sabotaging dies again? Is the edge reeded all the way around? It really looks like the die clashed with a broken collar.
Great find. This appears to be die dent from a fragment of a broken collar. Naturally, this will appear raised on the coin. This is the second coin I've seen with this kind of die dent; the other was a half dollar.
Thanks everyone! It definitely looks as though it is minted into the coin. I have to run to work now but i'll be on later when I have more time THANKS!!! J
Actually, I may have been mistaken regarding the identity of the foreign object. Notice that the reeds on a quarter consist of relatively broad plateaus separated by narrow, V-shaped grooves. The collar should show exactly the reverse -- narrow peaks separated by relatively broad valleys. But this die dent shows the an impression similar to the actual reeds on a quarter. A quarter is too soft to leave an impression in the die face, so now I'm confused as to what exactly left this dent.
One possiblity is that this is a piece of a broach. A broach is a ridged cylinder that, according to Arnie Margolis, is forced into an unfinished collar to create its ridged working face. This WOULD have the contours seen here.
Hey everyone, Just got home for lunch and decided to take a few more quick picks and see if I could identify anything else that would help. I found on the obverse of the coin on the A in States which is directly opposite the mark by the 2 there appears to be a few marks but nothing that seems to coincide with the marks on the reverse... Still stumped myself although that broach idea seems to be the best yet! Here are a few more pics to see if they help...
First, these are really good pics. I wish everyone on here could do as well. Second, I think this is struck thru foreign material, although i have no clue what it is. A great find.
Thanks everyone, I went ahead and sent the coin off to be examined so hopefully we will know more soon! I also noticed on this coin that it has what appears to be the early stages of a die chip I found on other coins to the top right of the reverse. I fould two coins with "early" stage chips of which one of those has the error on the 2, and also found 2 quarters with big die chips. Here is a pic of the early chip on the coin with the error on the 2. Here is a pic of the coin with the full chip. All sorts of stuff goin on with this coin! What is really funny is that the mark on the 2 looks like it is just a bag mark with the naked eye. I'll keep you posted as I find out more! Thanks! J
I received the quarter and I'm afraid the news will come as an anti-climax. The serrated impression is incuse, not raised. So it's not a die dent. It is simply a contact mark from the edge of another quarter.
wow, thats disappointing news. It looks raised in the photo's, makes me wonder about the rest of the coins being posted...
Hot springs doubled dies! Here is a pic of a potential doubled die Hot Springs Quarter. This is to supplement your superlative pics, posted here as well as on another thread of HOT SPRINGS DOUBLED DIES.
