Was searching coin rolls, think I came across my first extra thumb? If so is it rare? I don't know much about them, just heard and know of them. Thanks! Here are the pics.
Not sure how rare they are, I have 7 or 8 of them that I took out of mint rolls early last year there was a certain date on the box that contained them and I tore all mine apart to look for them.I am not at my winter home which is where I have most of my coins and info. Sorry I can't be of more help. Tom
Can't tell you the value but it is a known error and cool to find and put away but it ain't gonna by you a new car
Looks legit. Check out coppercoins.com to try and see which one matches. Nice find! http://coppercoins.com/advsearch.php And to mrweaseluv: just in technical terms, this is a variety because the anomaly occurs on the die itself, and it is not "unique", in the sense that the die that struck this coin probably struck hundreds if not thousands that have the same anomaly.
I bought a fresh one right out of the roll on eBay about a year ago for $3 and later found another one roll searching. So i paid $3 and im sure on eBay they are probably abundant, i dont think there is much action on this variety because its fairly common or just not that interesting to drive up demand but i could be wrong. I started a thread awhile back asking the same thing you are asking but got no answers, I do know that neither PCGS or NGC will slab them with the variety on the label.
Thanks for all the input! I believe it would be 2009P-1DR-097 but still not 100% sure. Thanks for the link! I'll just throw it in the book as a small find. Thanks all! Back to hunting....:hail:
I had never heard of this form of error, just went and looked through my '09 cents, and found one that I think may be this type of error. NOTHING like the amazing he the OP put, but something interesting. I'll post it tomorrow.
It looks like (or similar) to FY WDDR-001. Check here: http://doubleddie.com/60701.html for a detailed explanation of the markers and stages. Value-wise, I doubt you're looking at much in that condition (few bucks maybe), even being a more popular variety. In 2009 the DDs were hot, but have since cooled considerably, at least in my experience. I've straight rolls of a few different varieties that I'll probably be stuck with forever, but that's what I get for jumping on a trend. As for date stamps, yes... there are a few that can be quite valuable, but if you wish to know, it is something you need to research on your own.
