I found this 2007p Utah State Quarter while I was going through my change jar. I thought it was just really badly damaged at first. But, after a little research on here I found similar markings but not quite as extreme. I thought it might be important to note that the markings are running the same direction on both sides of the coin.
Yes.. I call it DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged Looks like it was somehow scraped against something in the same direction. It did not occur at the US Mint. Sorry but not a Mint Error
it was probably scraped on the ground as someone drove over it. Notice the deep gouges pushing and displacing metal around. And notice how all the scraps/scratches are all in the same direction, showing movement. And inconsistent scratchs/grouges show varying debris/surface it came in contact with.
It looks like "road rash" to me, and it is entirely conceivable that traction from the tire of a car could cause it to flip to the other side where it was, once again, damaged by another tire. Chris
FWIW, I've saved the close-up you created because it is an excellent example of the "Crater Effect" that so often afflicts many coins that people think are Mint errors (Die Gouges), but are actually nothing more than circulation damage. Thank you! Chris
Should have went with your gut.lol We’re the coins you saw with lines going across them in the same direction cents? That would be from an improper mix of alloys for that type of coin.
