Okay, so my wife found this "quarter" in the rejected coin slot of a soda machine and didnt notice anything weird. When I looked at it, I realized that it did not have the ridges pressed pressed into the side, have 2007 not 2009 as the year, and instead of the "in god we trust", has "God Bless America" along the top above George(same image as state quarters), with "Liberty" on the left, and nothing on the bottom. The reverse side has a completely different Puerto Rico image than the 2009 ones that I have seen, and this one says "2007". What I really want to know is if this is like a coin that was not minted completely or something, and if its worth more than its weight. Thanks for your help!!! Walter
Gonna need some pics Walt. How 'bout posting a few. One more teensy detail...Puerto Rico quarter was released in 2009, not 2007.
Pictures They are not the best, display is broken on the camera so I cant see what they look like til I transfer them to computer. Oh, and I know about the 2009 thing. i have a 2009 Puerto Rico quarter, image on back looks nothing like the one on this one that says 2007?? Could this have been a rejected design?
i'm 99% sure its a privately minted "medal" made to look like a state quarter. they usually sell em on TV to unsuspecting buyers
First off, the ridges you speak of are called reeding and all quarters produced by the US Mint within the past 100 years have this reeding. well worn examples may not have it since the core of the quarters produced since 1965 are 100% copper which is much more soft than the copper-nickel cladding sorrounding that core. Secondly, a coin which is not "minted" completely will be "missing" parts of the design. This could be due to the dies filling with grease or what not which in turn clogs them producine coins with missing design elements. Thirdly, no "patterns" or "trial strike of proposed designs" were ever made for the State Quarters series. All designs are done and approved via computer images and programs. So, after viewing your photographs, as small as they are, I can only conclude that what your wife pulled from the coinstar machine is nothing more than a token, similar to what is produced by the millions for the gaming industry. (i.e. Amusement parks, Chucky Cheese, etc.) With enough money, folks can get nearly anything minted nowadays as there are many manufacturers out there.
I have found one exactly like the one you have described. Have you gotten any other info on your quarter?
