    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

    #1. Nickels are not clad.
#2. The R was added to the coin after minting. It's damage.

I had an "R" fall off of a nickel once. Maybe that's it ?

You mean a Dropped Letter error?

The impression sure looks like the correct size. I am thinking possible dropped letter also.

    I'm getting a mental image of a pirate somewhere missing an "R, R, ..., R!"

It is too much a mirror image of the R above it to be accidental, and I can imagine no way it could have happened in the minting process. Has to have been added as an intent to look like a mint error. Maybe there IS a pirate out there somewhere???

It's raised right? So this would be considered a Rotated Reverse Die-Clash? But why can we only see the C and rim but no E?

I'm no expert, but the faint striations at the top of the "C" on your coin make me think thread strike-through, and the shape doesn't seem quite right to me for a clashed die. The OP's coin could not be a strike-through unless somehow a solid R-shaped object were loose in the mechanism and landed exactly under the R on the die. The R doesn't seem likely to be a clashed die, since it would have to clash with another obverse die that was misaligned just so (a very highly unlikely event!), and then there would surely be other letters. It is unlikely anyone at the mint "dropped" a punch on the die, since that would make a raised, not incused, "R," not to mention what would such a tool be doing there anyway. Again, I am not an expert, but nothing I know about the making and use of hubs and dies would explain this. Some expert would have to tell me what believable set of events could have happened at the mint to produce this before I would accept it as anything but intentional damage.

It is recessed into the coin.

This kind of error. If it is? Does not have anything to do with the die making process. It is part of the striking process. The R in this instance became filled with debris. the debris became dislodged from the die and fell on to the planchet. then the planchet was struck leaving an impression of the filling, an R.

A dropped letter happens when a letter becomes filled with debris during the striking process. The filled letter becomes dislodged from the die and falls on the planchet. Then the coin is struck with the impression.

It has already been graded, sorry, it is a mint error and it is an indentation of the r. I was told that I have 1 of maybe 2 but there should be a few more missing the r. While it was being made the r dropped and made the indent. So you should be looking for another dropped r or a missing r. Thank you and I will post the graded coin soon if you would like to see it.

    Yes please do so.
Mint Errors are attributed. Any and all coins can get graded. There is a difference.
