Anybody seriously thinking about sinking $800 in to this coin? It has a "W" mint mark and says $50 on the reverse. Whats up with that denomination anyway. I'd sure love one as a gift if anyone has taken a shine to me lately. You could all chip in I suppose. I'll just go wait by the mail slot now.

The one in the pic is the unc (about $610)
I agree though they are pretty but $800 bucks. That would be like a $225 proof Silver American Eagle if you figure that they have an aprx $200 premium

No I just don't think the coin looks that good, but that is my opinion.

Slap a little nostalgia in the form of an old coin and you can sell 600 dollars worth of gold for 800 dollars. Sweet work if you can do it and the mint can do it.

I suspect, but cannot prove, that the $800 for the proof buffalo will look cheap in retrospect about 5 years from now. With gold moving up recently, the premium of the proof version is getting pretty small.

i agree with cloudsweeper. Not only is the price of gold going up, but this is the first .999% pure gold, American coin, and this is never supposed to be minted again, a 1 time deal (supposedly). With a total of only 500,000 PERIOD, and a limit of 300,000 on the proofs,(or something) not all coins will be sold, and so they will be burned back down, making the value of the coin even rarer. I see nothing wrong with the coin...

If this is true, then I'm buying three of them.

2 major negatives on this coin.
1 To expensive to maintain collector base
    2 Dealers are probably buying.

That's a pretty good purchase. I hope they all come back 70's for ya.

I like them, but can't afford to invest in gold-----not today.

yea, i ordered a proof about 4 days ago.

they (mint) are supposed to end selling before the end of the year, so it is buy proof for $800 now, or hold your regrets forever....

    Not quite!
The U.S. Mint reports that as of July 5th. they had sold 106,300 of the Proof coins. This issue will be held to a total of 300,000 and then that will be all of the 2006's.
However, the law that made this all possible said it had to be a two year program, so there will be a 2007 Gold American Buffalo coin.
The figures of the uncirculated gold Buffalo's was given as 110,000 total as of July 5th. These are unlimited and will be made as the need exists until the end of the year when it will also change over to the 2007 year.
With the current price of gold, it's still a very good deal.:kewl:

I received my buffalo proof today. I am impressed. If it is only a two year program, then I would like to get a couple more and then match that next year. 800.00? there are only going to be so many minted and then no more. It's a unique coin with history. I think it is worth 800.00 or will be very soon.

    Not the same.

I have a gold proof that a friend bought from the mint on the table. What looks different is the poish in the background is textured. It takes a bit of getting use to but I have seen some coins from overseas peddled for a higher mark up with obscure motifs.

Well, I broke down and and ordered 3 coins. I just have to decide who is going to slab them now. I'm willing to take any advice on slabbing companies and please let me know if you've slabbed these coins and how satisfied you are with the service. I'd appreciate it.

I'm just scared to see that much gold go throught the US mail - Three times!

I just received mine today. Mine had a flow on the rim, but otherwise looked okay. Did anyone elses package smell funny? It smelled like some sort of cleaner or something. Maybe Pine Sol? Weird.
