    Hi Fastscan

    Welcome to the forum !!

There were no silver pennies (cents) minted ,, If you can posts pics, scans of your cent,, It more than likely has been plated with some other metal,,

a normal copper plated zinc cent should weigh 2.5 grams ,, even plated the weight increase would be very minimal .

    Thank you for the response.
Will try to get a pic of this penney.
Dont know about the weight yet, but when dropped from about 2" it dont sound like a penney. No "ring" to it, sounds dull.Dont know if plating can effect the sound that much.

It's prolly an error where the copper layer is missing. And zinc doesn't ring like the copper pennies minted before 1983.

Plated?...isn’t the copper all the way through.(alloy)
Does the mint report errors they may have went into circulation?

The mint trys not to make errors and when they do they try to find them before they leave the mint...if they don't they don't know anything about it...I would guess that your cent is plated.

After browsing around the internet about Penney plating, I ran across this site, http://www.finishing.com/0000-0199/196.shtml
.... Apparently it’s quite common, I also heard it can be mercury!
...great! I may have a toxic Penney!. Still I would like to know for sure...should I shave the edge a bit?. Or would weighing be better?

Well I'm 99% sure its plated and therefor damaged...but I would weigh it...by shaving the edge it would make more damage.

it is just a 2004 penny... why not cut it in half?

    ;)

is it a wierd sixe? ( not as big as a penny )

If it is it may be a wrong planchet, a penny struck on a blank dime... in that case it would be worth some $...

on second thought post a picture before you cut it in half!

Plated or not that looks cool. The edge defect looks like someone already tried to check to see if it was authentic.

I would guess plated...a dime planchet would be a tad smaller I think...I have seen 1 cent struck on dime planchet and it was neat!!

    1980 silver penny

I was searching the web for info on silver pennies also. I have a silver looking penny also dated 1980. Wanted to know if anybody has info if there is such a penny, or where I can look to get information on this.

Sorry to tell you that you likely have a coin that has been plated with another metal.
