When will the final mintage numbers be out for these coins? What are the estimates? I read on another thread that the regular reverse were minted for the first few months of the year. Anyway I'm very curious about the final totals.

Usually mintage totals come out in the coin papers within a few months after they are complete. Indeed, there are often monthly totals as the year progresses. It's a good idea to record these since it may be up to five years until they are included in the catalogs.

Last I remember seeing the three month total was in the 380 million range. There were no regular issue nickels made this year and there won't be until a new design is begun in 2006.

The final production figures will not likely be released until sometime next year.

As of right now, the US Mint has a preliminary production total, for 2004 nickels, of 1,181,280,000.

Of those more than one billion coins, I have yet to see one in circulation.

I have recieved a bunch of these new nickels in change. A Starbucks I go to, shares a building with a bank and they were handing out quite a few.

I thought the regular Jefferson nickels were minted for the first few months of the year. NO?

What's the typical minting for nickels each year and will more of the 2004's likey be minted?

The last 2003 dated nickels may very well have been minted in 2004. The date run often overlaps in either direction. Not sure if the 2004 were being minted early or if the 2003 ran late. The mint does not concern itself with small trivial things like this. They make coins to be used in commerce. The fed banks dictate mintages, and the mint works within that given number.

That would be news to me. Certainly no 2004 dated Monticello reverses were minted.

I'm not sure that there is a "typical" figure. As of the past several years, nickels have been minted in numbers ranging from a little less than a billion, to more than two billion.

Whether, or not, there will be more nickels minted this year, will depend on the demand for them from the Federal Reserve Banks.

I wouldn't count on that preliminary figure being anywhere near the final total, though.

Folks - you need to remeber that this year there are 2 nickel designs. And the first design used this year is not being minted any more - it stopped a while ago. I do believe the Mint has released the mintage numbers for this design - I just can't remember what it was right of the top of my head. I'll see if I can't look it up.

As for the 2nd design - they have not yet stopped striking these coins to the best of my knowledge so the mintage numbers for them is yet to be determined.
