United States 5 cents pieces are struck on planchets consisting of 75% copper and 25% nickel .Most of the time the nickel has a silvery appearance as the coin's color is dominated by the nickel metal. In the presence of a strong oxidizer (acid, base etc) the nickel will take on a copper color. These coppery "nickels" are fairly common.

This coin is not one of them but there are some nickels that have an improper metal mix that either has too much copper to nickel ratio or the way it was not completely incorporated together leaves the copper showing. However in both of these genuine examples the copper will be streaked (think "woody" cents) or spotty and never a full blown all over copper color unless it was an error struck on a cent planchet. The coloring is also natural meaning you will see nickel showing in there too with the copper not just a full streak of copper. It is also permanently a part of the coin unlike natural or artificial toning as this occurs when then sheets of metal are mixed and fabricated at the foundry for the mint. See image below so you know what to look for.

    Hi:)

    Welcome to ct!
    It’s called environmental toning.

It’s circulated who knows where it’s been or what it’s been in:facepalm:

Very likely it was a metal detector find and put back in circulation.
Photos are necessary. But environmental toning (rust) is usually the answer.
    NECRO THREAD! YAY!

Nickels aren't clad. They are solid cupro-nickel.
