Hi! I recently found a 2004 $20 star note-serial #EC 00127188 (one of the "first" in production) It has a fold down the center and a "pinhole" tear on the side. Very slightly used and in otherwise great condition. Folds on only 2 corners, slightly rounded corners... My husband and I would like to know if this is worth anything now? Or if we should hold on to it, or even just spend it if it won't be worth much more than face value ever. I would be open to any advice you guys have to offer and thanks! Jessica
http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/stars/ That is the site that I use for looking up most star note finds to see if there was a large number of them printed or not. The larger the number, the less valuable a star note. For your note, it appears that 3.2 million were printed in that run, so it probably isn't going to be that valuable especially with the damage that it has. Hope you have good luck searching for more!
hey I've been to that site before, when we first got it. I didn't quite know what I was looking at, then. Are you saying it's run #2 because of the "0012" that the serial starts with? If it is that, would it just be prudent to spend it, then? Seeing as, if there were that many made, it won't be worth much more than face value?
The way to use that site is from the main page link I gave choose your series and denomination, 2004 and 20 in this case, and click on the link. It will then take you to a table of the star notes printed in a run. Find the reserve bank that yours was printed from, C or Philly for your note. Then scroll your cursor over the entries in that column. In the top box of the page will appear a range for those star notes. In this case we scroll over run 1 of C and it gives the range of EC 0000 0001* - EC 0320 0000*. Since your note falls into that range it is one of the 3.2 million star notes printed for that run, so not worth much. However, if you scroll down one more row in that column, you find a 320K star note run, which has a fair amount of rarity. That gives a run of EC 0320 0001* - EC 0352 0000* which if your note had a serial that had fallen in that run number, it would have been worth keeping. The run numbers can all be different so you will need to look a note up on there and check the range of a run before you can determine what run it is in.
Most people think a *STAR NOTE* is a unique find, But in reality there are Alot out there and most do not pay over face!
Very untrue. Star notes are very rare. I used to work as a grocery cashier. The last time I seen a star note of any kind was 6 years ago. It was a $1 bill, still have it. Never ever seen one on larger denomination bills.
That's probably because all the people who found them thought they were valuable and so did not spend them. Personally, if I were ever to get one in change I think I would keep it for the novelty.
I don't find any star notes to be worth more than face value unless: It is very old. and or It is very rare. and or It is perfectly crisp. and or It has a fancy serial number. All of these posts about IS MY WRINKLED 2009 $1 STAR NOTE WORTH ANYTHING? Spend these and stop posting about them. OK I GOT CLICK BAITED I SEE THIS POST IS 7 YEARS OLD. YOU GOT ME.
Yes this thread is 7 yeard old! If the OP would of kept that star note it would be worth about a million dollars now!
