Brother found this today, no luck trying to research it, is this after mint damage? New to the coin world.
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Debbie Robbins ! I agree that it is post-mint damage (PMD), but I don't know what the culprit was trying to accomplish. Chris
I thought about that, but the rim on both sides should appear to be higher as the edge becomes flat. Chris
@Debbie Robbins Never use metal tweezers to hold any coin.. that is a big coin collectors no-no! Even though you quarter is damaged it does not matter in this case but just letting you know for future reference.
Paddy is right. The metal tweezers can damage the coin. FWIW, you can purchase plastic tongs online at JPs Corner. They are lockable so you don't have to hold the tongs while you take the photos.
of course, even with plastic tweezers, you should not be touching the surfaces of coins as on proof coins, you could still even slightly mar the perfect surface. Hold coins by the edges. With this damaged coin though it really doesn't matter.
It's an Alabama state quarter not a Helen Keller. It's been damaged. Someone intentionally did something to the obverse. Spend it as a quarter if possible.
