2001 P North Carolina quarter, (I think) missing clad on both sides question

Hi, I am new to this, altho I grew up with an aunt who had an extensive collection of old coins, as in Indian head, Mercury dimes, and tons of silver dollars.

I noticed that a 2001P North Carolina state quarter we have is seemingly missing clad on both sides. I would greatly appreciate any input as to whether it may have value other than the 25 cents I suspect!

    Much thanks! Lynn

In person, it appears as to it is copper on both sides.

    Environmental damage.
It probably wouldn't have struck up so strongly if it were missing its outer clad layers.

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Lynn!

To me, it doesn't look like it is missing the clad layers. Have you weighed it?

    Thanks, Chris!

No, I haven't weighted it. (Geez, that never occurred to me!) But, it is a deep bronze color.

I say copper, my son says bronze. What would weight tell? (I'll learn!) :)

Rick, that's not true. Quite often, the clad layer separates before the planchet is struck.

If it weighs the same as a normal quarter, then it isn't missing the clad layers. If it was missing one or both clad layers, it would weigh less.

Thanks, Chris. Would this be a jeweler scale, perhaps, and if so, what should a quarter weigh?

I did say "probably". Your coin, a great one BTW, is missing only one clad layer, not both.

The clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams.

By the way, if you get a copy of the Red Book of US Coins, it will provide weights & measurements for all of the coinage produced by the Mint and its branches.

I realize it is missing only one layer, but it is so thin that missing both layers probably (note that I said probably, LOL!) would not have too much negative effect on the strike. I must add that I have never seen a coin missing both clad layers.

It's suppose to be clad on both sides.

They are both clad. The one of the left has a slight bit of toning.

Using a digital scale that measures to the .00 gram, weigh the quarter and show the result.
