Plated Not a Mint Error Sold as a novelty. The Quarter is real but the plating is done outside the US Mint
It doesn't look plated.all the plated quarters I have seen are one solid color.this one has 3 distinct colors and they do not look worn or blended..
Plated quarters are all one color even over the copper..this one has 3 different colors.and the edge looks like any other quarter only different colors except for the copper center
The coin would be worn all over and worn down if that was the case.it is in very good condition.and both sides are consistent in color but not the same color..and it's has a taller ridge than the other ones I have looked at..and it wieghs 5.85 grams on my scale..
the condition ? it is now post mint damage. you might get a bididiot to buy it on Ebay. most coin collectors will not touch plated coins. sorry to have to tell you that. it can be in perfect shape, but once it was gold plated it is now a Damaged coin.
it pains me to say this but there are people out there that collect gold plated coins. Ebay is full of them. what hurts the coin hobby is when people of all ages think that these are worth money. when they go to resell it and are told they are offered next to face value and then the owners get all upset for paying some stupid high price for them and then they want nothing to do with coins.
keep searching threw coins. did you get this quarter in a bank roll ? fun find any how. keep it for fun.
@paddyman98 and @spirityoda are absolutely correct. When the US mint first released this series entrepreneurs everywhere realized the excitement level the public showed for these. They were packaged, plated and hawked every way from Sunday at the time. Yes, unfortunately yours was plated. I got one in change myself some years back. Common as could be and not mint related.
they are still hawked by various companies that plate any coin with gold, silver, or multiple other metals to make distinct "collector" coins. just search gold plated quarters, or stuff like that. less than 1/100 grams of metal is used to plate, so it wears off very easily if not just used for display.
