I would like to know the thoughts on this as an investment, both coin and metal wise. Of course the non proof is worth more, but the proof is available for a wee bit over spot. 1/4 once of both Gold and Platinum.....1/2 of PM First and only coin done like this buy the US Mint, had difficulties with quality control.. 7,261 mint 27,445 proof http://moderncommemoratives.com/2000-library-of-congress-10-bimetallic-gold-and-platinum/
Collect whatever strikes your fancy, but don't expect that most of your fancies will prove to be profitable. Chris
I wouldn't invest in one but I do collect 'em (commemoratives, that is). Still need one but I'm willing to wait for the right moment to purchase.
From what I have noticed lately, both the proof and the BU are down considerably from peak prices. If you look at Heritage prices for MS 70, they peaked in 2010 at about $5,000...recent prices for that same grade are about $2000-$2500. I am actually a fan of these and would certainly not mind owning a proof for a decent price. The cheapest proofs on ebay have sold for around 725, which seems like a good price considering spot is about 570.
Well I bought one thinking it was collectible, granted it is a nice coin, unique in way as the Mint had trouble with them...Yes at a premium but in the time I have bought it, it has gained in value on PM alone...I just like them a lot.
