I was checking prices of the 1999 Silver proof set on Ebay and they are averaging $275.00 a set. I seem to remember them going for well over $300 last year, has anyone else noticed this trend?
the recent coin world ads that i have seen, have them ranging in the $330+ area. a friend and i both purchased the last 2 sets a dealer had in terre haute indiana for $285 each. he did state that he has had them since 1999, and his shop appeared like he wasn't kidding. his display cases were full of proof sets of all later years w/ absolutely no order to them. they were both beautiful proof sets w/ just a hint of toning beginning on the dimes. as far as ebay goes, i have never purchased a coin from it, nor do i shop there. i may have missed some bargains, but am more comfortable w/ heritage and stacks, plus a few others.
They have seemed to settle just a bit, but I would not look for a downward trend on this particular set anytime soon. The problem is how they were originally distributed. The US Mint put a strict order limit of 2 per address on this set, and offered no dealer bulk sales. What happened is that over time, if a dealer wanted a 99 silver proof set to sell, he had to pry one away from the people who originally ordered them. If he wanted more than 3, he had to find multiple people who would sell. Many of these mint purchasers didn't want to sell. This drove and continues to drive the price of this particular proof set.
Possibly due to the rather large populations of the states which are included in this set, in particular the state of New York. Included also in this set is North Carlina, Kentucky, Rhode Island and Vermont which have a pretty health population by themselves. Some believe the 2004 set will be popular also. Depends on which side of the state quarter fence you are on.
if it helps i think i bought the 1999 set for way over 350 late in 2005/early 2006 but since then the prices have dropped because a hoarder started selling so yes the prices have gone down are you looking to buy or sell?
One of the mints bigger snafues don't you think Mike? I still have my original three purchased from the mint and they're not leaving "papa" for a long time.
The Silver Proof Sets are the one thing I was insistent on buying from the Mint...turns out that I bought 2 of every Proof, Mint and Silver Proofs that came out on the State Qtrs. All those Red Boxes look really nice in the set holder in the safe. These are of course for my son when he gets older....the 1999, I think it is the only set worth such a high premium and then the 2001?? Anyway it's not really what I collect but glad I have them.... I think interest is beginning to wane as the State Quarter series is coming to an end next year. The addition of DC and the territories will prolong the drop, but eventually more people will begin to sell, especially when they see the downtrend in prices. These sets have been slowly redistributing for nearly 9 years now. Eventually dealers will have more supply and as demand decreases after the series ends I think the price of this set will return to more reasonable levels within the next few years.
They seem to be down a little bit. I bought two of them from the mint. One of our grandsons was born in 1999, so I gave him one. Sure wish I had bought several.
Cmon..you sell when the trend is hot. Just like mentioned before..once collectors move on to something else, this proof set is going to drop in price even further. Best time to sell is when it's hot and everyone is looking for it. If you have more than 1, I would sell and just keep one for yourself if you like to collect that kind of stuff. IMO
The 2001 set has the key Sacagawea proof in it. That's the hardest year to get a PF70 Sacagawea. At one time the raw coin was selling for around $80. The PF70 Sacagawea was selling close to $400.00 but a few have recently sold for around $225.00. I think the recent price weakness in some coin categorys amounts to three things. (1). The mint has been unleashing a number of new products, so collectors have to spread their coin dollars thinner(Gold spouse, Presidential, Platinum 10th Anniversary, ect). (2). The recent runup in gold prices has some collectors dumping alot of their silver and switching to gold. (3). The economy is very sluggish & with a rather murky looking future(credit crisis, housing slump, unemployment, Oil prices, relations with Iran & Russia). Leaving many collectors on the sidelines. If silver prices continue to rise it will add to interest in silver proofs sets in the future.
Wow, these have really come down in price: http://www.mintproducts.com/1999-mint-issued-9-coin-silver_proof-set.html TC
I finally broke down and purchased a set from Mintproducts.com on sale for $159.99: http://www.mintproducts.com/1999-mint-issued-9-coin-silver_proof-set.html When I first posted this same link back in September (post #18), I believe they were selling for $189.99. These have come way down in price from a few years ago, and I have been waiting patiently to strike. They started with 11 sets yesterday but there are still 2 remaining if you act fast. I probably could have saved $10 more on ebay but decided against it for numerous reasons. I will post some pics when I get the set. TC
