So I was going through some pocket change when I found this dime: (These are bad pictures, sorry) On The front, you can see that the whole thing is slightly off center. And then on the back, I'm not sure what happened there, but it looks to me like it came from the mint that way, as there is no raised edge on that side? Any opinions would be appreciated.
Yes, but they don't look to be made through pliers or tools, as far as I can tell, it looks like indentations, then spaces where the die missed or something.
I remember that counter top from a post that I answered yesterday about an extremely damaged cent. Looks like the same damage, same reply.
Thats an odd thing to say lol. I just joined today, so I'm not sure how my counter top would end up on a post yesterday. Anyways, are you saying PMD? I'll try and get a better camera to take some more pictures with so you can see where it raises up between where you can see the normal image of the dime, then the odd indentations. Also, what about the front, because it does look slightly off center to me.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude. I realize that it came off that way, but there was a Lincoln cent "error" thread yesterday that looked fairly identical to this one. But from what I am seeing here, I would say PMD. I just don't see any way that this could have happened during the minting process. But who knows, I've been wrong before. BTW welcome to CT
Thanks for the welcome and, as I said, I am very open to any suggestion here. Now, the part I wanna figure out is what the heck happened to it? I've never seen markings like that before. Also, am I just crazy for thinking its slight off center (on the front side), cause no one has said anything about it lol
That is one severely damaged dime. It did not leave the Mint like that. Someone with some time to kill defaced that coin.
It's very very slightly off center, but it's common to find dimes like that. It'd have to be a lot more off center for any reason to take note of it.
Yeah, I was looking through a bunch of coins and noticed.... Most coins seem to be a little off center. SOL again I guess Thanks for the opinions
Its not a chisel, that much I can tell, because where the indentations run, its at the same level as the still intact part of the image, then raised between indentations. Also, its smooth all the way across, not scratched as best I can tell.
I also have a 1999 Philly dime slightly off center struck that is mangled CLEARLY FROM THE STRIKING PROCESS. Its in near mint condition aside from the mangling to its edges that happened at the mint when it was struck. It also has odd pit marks from the mint. Its obviously not wear & tear. I don't care what anybody else says. The etching & detail is flawless except for 2 offset mangled edges & weird indent pot marks on the surface (again, NOT wear & tear). This dime is too exceptional of condition to think it was damaged over time or intentionally. This 1999 P "Mangled & Pitted" (can I "coin" that term? Hahaha) dime error is going to be known in time. I'd even bet a dime on that. ;-)
