Greetings, This is my first post so please go easy on me... on second thought, let me have it. I have a 1999 US One Cent coin that is silver in color. It found me while I was working in the accounting office of a supermarket (November of 1999). I was stacking brand new rolls of coins (in transparent plastic wrapping) in the safe when something caught my eye. Towards the end of one of the new rolls was a flash of silver. Sure enough, I split open the roll and amongst the copper shine was a silver penny. I immediately gave it to a numismatist friend for safe keeping. He put it in a cellophane/cardboard holder and said he didn't have a clue about it. I haven't thought about it until I rediscovered it a few moments ago. Only two people have held this coin, so I guess it would be considered uncirculated. I kept a roll of new quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies from that year, so I can show you what kind of wrapper it was in when I found it. I will upload pics once my wife gets home with our good camera. Can anyone tell me any information about this coin? Cheers, DDD.
I also have some planchets from new rolls of pennies as well. It's pretty amazing what you find when you count up all the change at night. My best find was six 1920's standing liberty quarters, one at VF valued at $75 in 1999.
If it is from an original FRB (Federal Reserve Bank) wrapped roll, then it is most likely an unplated cent. Read more about unplated cents here: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Errors/Unplated_Cents.html
Thanks, CM1, for the information. I'm sure this is the case, as mine looks just like the picture in the link (minus the mint mark). I saw in a similar post that the weight should be taken into consideration as well. Do you think I should remove it from the cardboard 2x2 to get a weight on it, and do you think it is worth getting it certified? I don't know if it a trick of light or not, but it sure looks like the last 9 in the date on the front and the "ribus" in e pluribus unum look a bit faint... Cheers, DDD,
Hi, I'm new here. I also have this same coin, a 1999 metal/silver colored, over sized penny. It's almost the size of a nickel and very light weight and kinda thin. I've looked for information and this is where google sent me. Can anyone tell me anything about this and if it's valuable? Found it where I worked some years ago, in the nickel slot. Thanks for your help, Kim
