Hi. I found this 1997 quarter w/ smooth edge. The eagle on rear is smooth also. Looks spooned, but same size as other quarters I compared against. Looks like a lot of copper from the sides. Is this an error coin?

    No! It is man-made damage.

All around, it is too evenly flat to have been spooned. Remember, a spoon is curved so it would by highly unlikely that the edge would be flat. Also, there appears to be no evidence of the rim widening on the obverse or reverse as you would expect to see from spooning.

Have you ever held a coin between your thumb and forefinger and rotate it as you tap it against a flat surface? I'm not saying this is what happened, but it is a bit similar to spooning.

Check the outside diameter with vernier calipers and compare to regular quarter.

I was a poor kid with time on my hands. I spooned way more than my fair share of nickels mostly. Quarters were too valuable to me to desecrate…… But yes, they come out surprisingly true when you take the time.

Well, no matter how it got that way, I'm pretty sure it's not a mint error, just damaged and still worth a quarter.
