All i ever see is proof silver eagles dated 1995 selling for exhuberant amounts of money. So im talking to my neighbor last night, and in passing, he mentions that he has a 1995 silver eagle sitting on his fireplace mantle. I told him if it really was, it could be worth as muich as several thousand dollars. I told him how the coin might have part of a 2 coin set with 1 gold and 1 silver. He told me the coin was alone and part of a mint set. He ran back to his house, grabbed the 2 boves he has in his entire collection lol. turned out he did in fact have a 1995 proof silver eagle but with the 'P' mintmark. Sill, worth a couple hundred or so - at least in the redbook. He also had the 1995 silver premier proof set. i was very shocked!!! here this guy only has these 2 items his grandfather bought him, and they turn out to be some pricey coins - at least compared to issue price. After i told them the appx values, he mentioned he might not want to keep them on top of his fire place : what luck So .. that is the closest i have ever gotten to a 1995 proof silver eagle
That's awesome~ I think that's where my early coin collecting luck went to. When I look back at the Eagles and Proof/Mint sets I'd gotten as gifts when I was younger, it seems like I only managed to miss the best ones!
The 1995 proof eagle from Philly is worth about $150 raw and the Premier proof set is worth about $80..so he is sitting on about $230. Not bad. Also, for your information, the 1995 West Point proof silver eagle did not come in a 2 coin set, that I know of. I've only seen it in the 10th anniversary set that included the 1oz proof silver eagle along with 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 gold eagle issues. This set here: http://cgi.ebay.com/10th-Anniversary-1995-W-Silver-and-Gold-Set-5-Coins_W0QQitemZ300179688653QQihZ020QQcategoryZ39486QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
thanks andrew, that must be the set i was thinking of. either way, its always been outside my finances, so its always been largely ignored!
I don't know about the rest of you, but here's what struck me about this story: Here's a guy whose grandfather left him only a couple of coins, but what surprises me is that not only was his grandfather knowledgeable about giving him something that was actually worth something, it seems that the ONLY things he left to him were things of value. The only coins I have gotten from relatives have been junk silver dollars and two mint sets (71 and a 72). Like your friend, I have also kept them and don't really reflect on their value. I merely appreciate the thought that I was worth leaving something to. It just kind of struck me that people actually DO inherit good coins too...
well, the coins werent 'left' for him. his gradfather just bought them for him and another grandchild or 2. He just decided to buy them from the mint that year. no ther reason. it wasnt for numismatic purposes becuase he thought they might be worth more inthe future, it was just ... because. To my knowledge, he grandad is still alive. But its like you said Mike, all i ever got was sentimental items, cerainly nothing worth that much. It not a million dollars, but mide as well be i was just happy to see one - even though it IS the same design as every other silver eagle ... im not sure why i got a bit giddy .. i just did
It's not entirely uncommon for some of the better Mint products from the 1990s to show up with casual collectors, occasionally even the 1995-W Dollar. Some individuals who collected during this period simply purchased every product that the US Mint released and therefore have all of the modern rarities.
I have question about some coins I received: Proof Silver Eagles 1992, 1993, 1994 & 1995; all are "P" mint marks except the 1992 which is "S" mint marked. I paid $17.95 each for them. Do the above postings mean just the 1995 Proof Eagle recoups what I paid in total for the four coins? I have no plans to sell them, as I bought them for my grand daughter. Just curious.
well, the 1995 ASE i saw was the 'P' mintmark, and thats the one that would go for $150-200 or so depending on a few factors. I am not sure without looking into it, how much your other eagles may be worth.
What I would suggest is going to Ebay and searching for closed auctions on proof silver eagles in those dates. If I recall correctly I believe you might make a few bucks off of the others. And yes if you paid 17.95 for each coin the 1995 would cover the cost for the other 4. Want would be a really good present would be to get the rest of the proofs and give her a complete set of silver eagles.
the 93, 94, and 95 proof silver eagles except for the 95w and the 2006p reverse proof, those three are the most expensive ones of the series all around $100 or more. nice buys.
