I found this 1995-D Roosevelt Dime in a coin jar, and it is a weird orange color on both the obverse and the reverse, including the rim, and it weighs 2.3 grams. I thought at first maybe someone had painted it, but it's definitely not paint, why is it orange??? Also...hello everyone
It’s environmental toning. Probably from being in the ground. Check out @paddyman98 posts in his metal detecting threads and you can see all kinds of environmental toning on coins.
The clad on both sides is made of Cupro-Nickel. 75% Copper and 25% Nickel. The copper tones depending on the environment it was discovered in. Here are examples from my detecting hunts - It occurs on Nickels also which new collectors think the Nickel was struck on a Copper Planchet.
Thank you so much once again, I really value your opinion. I have a question for you, is it a form of deterioration beginning in the clad layers that changes the weight of the coin?
