Hi everyone, I recently thought i came across some double dies only to learn through this forum and pics they seem to be machine doubling I happen to be looking through my change with my new loop and came across a quarter that stood out even to the naked eye. With the naked eye it looks almost blurry around the letters. Through the loop it is obvious something is doubled. The strongest of the doubling is on the "God" and "Trust" there is slight doubling on the rest of them. I'm not an expert coin photographer but i just put my camera lens up to the loop and took the best pictures i could. I had to resize them to be able to post them to the thread. I'm a total newbie but have done lots of research. I've found through these posts that machine doubling looks more flat and shelf like but can be really strong and when i compared my other coins they were spot on for MD. This coin has the doubling the same thickness and is raised to the same level as the rest of the lettering which is more in truth to an actual double die. My grandma died recently and left me some morgans and i've been in love with coins and the history behind them ever since. Any suggestions on whether or not its a true double die or machine doubling would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time Serenity
Sorry, but it does not appear to be a doubleD die but rather machine doubling. (Note the flat, shelf-like doubling which is characteristic of machine doubling.)
Here are some examples of a doubled die. In the case of the Kennedy half dollar, note the split serifs and on the Morgan dollar note that the doubling of the letters and the "Alligator Eye" is rounded rather than flat and shelf-like. Chris
Close up on the g u s especially it looks like split serifs more like the top picture you posted. I know it's not the best pic.Like I said I'm no expert and I appreciate all the responses
