Hi, I'm new here. Sorry if this is a common question... I came across a couple of coins today as I was rolling loose change. One is a 2001 New York State quarter minted in Philadelphia. I've seen them sold on ebay for as little as $1 and as much as $18. Mine is in circulated and poor condition. Also, I have a 1990 penny that has a raised rim all the way around and is silver in color. I could only find one thread about this penny and the question about it wasn't resolved. Anyone have anything you can share with me? I'm just recently coin collecting and I'm starting with junk silver as an investment and hedge yadda yadda. Thanks! :)

Your NY quarter is worth face value.

Without a photo we can only guess about your 1990 cent. The raised rim is supposed to be there. My guess is the copper plating was somehow worn off the rim (which is the highest part of the coin) exposing the zinc core.

Hi, thanks for replying. :) Actually the penny is just like this dude's. http://www.cointalk.com/t56763/ I didn't realize til right now that is the same site as this one. The rim is definitely thicker and taller than a regular penny. Just curious if it was some kind of flaw in 1990.

The one in the link you provided is just an incompletely plated coin. If yours looks the same then that's what it is. It might be considered a minor error by some but, even so, it's probably only worth one cent.

Post mint rim damage, this happens all the time, I've seen many like that.
