Did I pull a run-of-the-mill grease filled die, or a known error, from today's hardware store change?

I can't find any sign of a mintmark under the 60x setting of my QX3.

The 60X picture was taken without moving the coin after the 10X shot.

Could be run of the mill grease filled die.....I found a NH SQ that didn't have a mintmark....I think value was about $5.

    OK...first thing...get your title right...BIG difference b/t a 1988 and a 1998 ;)

I have been searching for one of these since the summer 1988.....never had the luck. From what I can recall, it is a Denver mint struck coin. There was a small batch struck without mint mark. Beyond recalling a small news article that kicked off my error hunting days, I don't remember much else.

I'd get it authenticated....I know, I know, your favorite thing to do :p.....if genuine, its a SWEET find ;)

I would wonder about that atricle....how do they know its a missing MM and not a grease filled die....and how can you tell one from another one?
I sounds like one of the fads that come out for about a year.

Thanks miterman2003...that's the one I'm referencing, just wish it said more.

Simple reason I don't "wonder about that article"...which was a national TV news "article" by the way, is because I was many more years out of diapers than you were when the error occured.

That doesn't even come close to an answer on how they know....many things are on National TV that come out later as not being true.....I think the old saying is right....if you can get it in black and white or on TV no matter how wrong it might be anyone will take it as truth.

After reading the "Error Coin Encyclopedia" a few weeks ago I don't see how anyone can say for sure that a coin is missing a mintmark when it could be just a grease filled die.....
Any help would be great as I'm trying to learn abotu Errors.

I wonder what kind of coin collector would call CENTS Pennies......that makes me wonder.....also he doesn't state a price....kindof strange if it is rare....

Thanks to all for the links, and I'll do some more research on this.

Pretty neat, dies do break, etc. I've got a Rosey dime around here someplace w/o a date. It's new and clad, got it back in the 90's.

How do you know it is "mintless"? Did you taste it? No minty freshness?

All kidding aside, that's pretty cool. Never seen on before.

    Hi All,
While Ken seldom makes a mistake, his description of those quarters as not having a mintmark under the date makes no sense. I havent heard of anything like this other than a filled die error and that is somewhat common.

What clues you in to it being a "Ken Potter" site?

    Speedy,

You may be on to something! I would definitely question anyone that states "No Mint Mark under the Date" of some of the 1988 and 1989 Quarters! The Mint Mark on the 1988-D and 1989-D Quarters is to the right of the ribbon in Washington's hair.

I think that website is of a person who got many of the coins back in the 80's when the HYPE was strong as a MISSING MINT mark......like lawdogct stated there was ad's on TV.....so this guy more than likely went and bought as many as he could.....now that they are worthless...he wants to bring back the old hype so he doesn't lose his money.

First off....I never stated anything about "ad's", TV or otherwise. So if your going to quote me, do it accurately.

How are you coming to a conclusion that
Do you have some proof your not sharing? Or are you some sort of wacked out mystic?

Common Speedy, the web site is titled Pocket Goodies: (what to look for in you pocket change), not," Hey Sucka, come buy my pipe dream coin investment attempts". Or did you reinterpret the webpage the same way you did with what I previously wrote? If you bothered to scroll down, you'd find the following at the bottom of the page:

Normally, I would not take such an antagonistic stance as you usually display alot of knowledge and wisdom. But this time you jumped right into being adamantly ignorant. I understand your doubts and concerns, they're legitimate enough, but immediately dismissing something because "you've never heard of it" and "can't see how it could be" and then following it up with misquotes and slander is just plain dumb.

Now, that being all being said, lets go back to intellectual debate with the following question:

How have all the other validated "no-mint" coins been validated?
