Yes they call it a wide AM. But the only thing different about the reverse is the size of the FG. This is a transitional reverse not a WAM.

According to variety vista there's 7 identifiable dies by markers for 1988P and 3 for 1988D
    1988 1c RDV-006, Die 1 of 7
    1988-D 1c RDV-006, Die 1 of 3

1988's FG is supposed to look like the below which is RDV-005:

the variety has the reverse of RDV-006 that was meant for the 1989 reverse and looks like the below:
Note the G is "flared" compared to RDV-005.
This G is what you should be looking at to identify the 1988 RDV-006.

As far as the AM goes on these it's imperceptible to identify it there and a bad way to identify it in general. the lettering is slightly sharper, but they both have the same gap really.

Hope this helps to clarify the situation, there is no 1988 wide AM because they all are wide AM, HOWEVER, there is a "flared G" 1988 variety in both P and D mints, which is the reverse die (RDV-006) that was supposed to be used for 1989 cents.

Lol. I can't fix pcgs. It should be called "1988D FS-901" or "rev. Of 1989" or "RDV-006".
They've had it like that for a really long time but as I've said both RDV-005 and RDV-006 have a wide AM. The G in FG is the easiest means of identifying it.

It's confusing because they made it confusing and been labeling it wrong for at least 6 years now, perpetuating the confusion because that's how they did the label for it and they sold some so now they want to keep it that way.

Actually even PCGS has the 1988-D wide AM, as the only error variety recognized by PCGS themselves.

88 D is not recognized for the wide AM as both 88 and 89 are wide AM's the transitional variety has to do with the FG.
