Hi New to this forum and have a question in regards to a 1985 one dollar bill. I received the bill approx 25 yrs ago. Noticed that it was not cut properly and the serial numbers and seals were misaligned. Put it away as i was not sure wether it was legit. Came across it currently while going thru some clutter that i was cleaning out. Question is, is it legit and would it be worth getting graded. Have received several suggestions from, get it graded to it being a very common error. Just trying to get some opinions as i am no expert nor a collector Thanks for any opinions.
I know the mis-cut bills can be faked by purchasing a un-cut sheet from the mint and then cutting the entire sheet however you want. I am not sure how they would fake the offset of the first printing. I would say it is real and would be worth having graded.
I don't think the serial numbers would be in the wrong places if this was purposly cut wrong from a sheet. Someone will have something more useful to say than me, I'm sure!
I agree with the grading at a tpg. Maybe the top edge folded over before the 3rd printing and the sheet was cut befor it was noticed? Would love to hear from numbers!
I think camlov2 was just trying to make the point that normally you see the cutting issue on notes that were issued as uncut sheets. Not that this was from one of those sheets. The serial number range and date would tend to indicate as much. I think something like I described is more likely. If it's a fake they did everything they could to draw attention to it.
If genuine, which it appears to be, it's a very valuable error. I'm not a fan of currency TPGs, but your note seems an ideal candidate.
It is not a fake, but is a real note. You can generally see that since the seals and serials are in the wrong place as well. If it were a fake, the cutting would be one of the only ways to find out, but rickmp showed us that the run this note is from was not an uncut sheet. Plus, it's hard to fake the seals and serials in a way that does not show slight wear in the areas they would normally be in. I would say this is a note representing multiple errors and your first item of business is to have it authenticated/graded. You could be looking at a very high premium for this note, worth hundreds, or even thousands of $$$!!
At the very least, get it authenticated, graded and encapsulated. PCGS is probably the best. The only way to tell the true value of this error is to put it up for auction. I don't know if Ebay or an auction house like Heritage is the better move. Good luck!
I appreciate the info. I was unsure as to wether or not to have it graded. I did not want to send it in and then look foolish if it was not a legit note
No body can tell if it's real or fake from these pictures. Value, who knows, I wouldn't count on thousands. If authenicated by a reputible TPG then I would look to get it into one of the signature auctions that happen a few times a year. I do not think ebay would be the way to go on this note if real. If if turns out to be faked of tampered with in some way (doubtful) then it is worth nothing. Remember that the advice you get here comes from members of all ages and experience levels. Take it all with a grain of salt. Get it graded and good luck! Darryl
Hi Folks Just have a follow up question in regards to this note. I took it to a local coin and currency shop as i don't belong to a grading co.The person at the shop said it would not be worth the cost associated with getting it graded compared to the worth of the note. Just trying to see if this is accurate info or not. Thanks for any opinions or suggestions
My opinion is that the coin shop is wrong (if you can find someone to combine orders with so that you don't pay full grading and shipping fees).
