So is this an error or dipped? I know it's legit. I put it on the scale and it weighed out correctly. All the features are on it (Lincoln, FG, etc). I don't think it's been dipped but maybe you guys can chime in and compare. I took a close up so maybe this will help determine if this is an error? I do see a pin hole on the reverse side (left of steps). Also, looks like corrosion on the bottom. Thanks for your help
I would say science experiment but that wouldn't take .6 grams off the weight. Maybe an expert can weigh in. Other than the weight change I vote science experiment.
The weight is within the range for zinc cored lincolns, maybe a fraction on the high side of average. The key is the area on the coin's reverse near the "C" in cent where an electrode alligator type clip was applied for plating. Plated coin IMO. Jim
<<I would say science experiment but that wouldn't take .6 grams off the weight. Maybe an expert can weigh in. Other than the weight change I vote science experiment.>> According to the Red Book, the coin is .04 grams too heavy which might be the added metal plating.
The weight of a new zinc cent should be 2.50 grams +/- 0.1 grams according to Breen's Encyclopedia, so 2.4-2.6 grams would be in tolerance, although a bag of them should avg. very close to 2.50.
rounded: nope, and then 1) the details wouldn't be fully struck up-- smaller planchet 2) There would be the copper core showing on the rim
Too heavy to be on a dime planchet (2.27 grams) and too well struck and struck to the full diameter. Post mint plated.
