I have had this penney since 1983 as my lucky penny. I was recently told that it may be worth a lot of money. Can anyone tell me anything about it. I will attach a picture.
to CoinTalk katespath. I'm not into errors, but the value of off-center strikes goes up as the strike moves further from the correct position, and in severe cases hving a readable date is much better than dateless. Of course the zinc spots on yours, which would ID it as being no older than 1982 even if it were dateless, also bring down the value somewhat. Regardless of value, it's a nice find.
Somethings are best left not knowing lol. Like my widows mite, I was given that and told it was worth loads...recently I looked it up, only worth like $30. I was happy thinking I had a very expensive coin Now though
Roy forgot to tell you his favorite saying: "US$0.01 is one cent. There's no such thing as a United States "Penny."
It is dated 1983 and I would be pleased to know that it was worth one cent. I have no intention of selling it, but if it is valuable I would leave it to my grandchildren some day. I have all the money I need and more things than I want, so it's value us merely sentimental, after all it is my lucky penny.
Hi, The $1.00 to $4.00 estimate is pretty good. usually these can be found for about $2.00 or so in this condition. Bill
Even though it is not worth much, it is still fun having something that the gov't messed up big time on. Save onto it, its very nice. May I ask how you got it?
If it didn't have the zinc spots I'd put it closer to $7. I see dateless cents like yours without the zinc spots for $5 at a local show all the time (guy has a few dozen). Neat finds though.
I really don't remember, I have had it for so long, since 1983 to be exact. I just kept it in my purse as my reminder that even Uncle Sam and computers are not perfect.
Sorry to dig up this old thread, but I didn't want to start a new thread just for something that has been discussed before. I just found one in my grandfathers items that were left to me. I came here to find out the price. It seems like they would be worth more..It's dateless too. Oh well.. Nice coin anyway http://www.flickr.com/photos/7778175@N04/3063641509/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/7778175@N04/3064479610/ Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I would be really great if it was a 1983-P "Off-Center" and "Doubled Die Reverse" Cent! Now that would be worth a few bucks!!! There are probably several known specimens but I have only seen one! Kate...Does it look like the Reverse lettering is somewhat doubled? If you can't tell, then could you post a close-up of the Reverse? If the lettering shows well enough in the pics, then maybe we could tell if there is any doubling. Frank
Frank - kate has not been around since 2006. Parastorm - my dealer has had several of these pennies in and it seems like they are usually $5 to $10 dollars depending on what the error is. I think the last time I saw a dateless one it was $7.95 - not positive. I guess low demand might account for the costs since I would not really expect that many of these around.
Hi, first time I've said anything in here, I have a chance to buy a penny today, that is a bit more off center that this one, but it is in real nice shape, and you can see the top half of the date, it's a 1983. Candy see mm. On ebay ppl are asking over $700 not graded. This guy isn't into coins that much, but he said he would sell it to me for half of that. From what I've seen those type of errors really are not worth that much? PLEASE HELP ME ASAP....
I hate to answer without pictures, but if you description is correct the coin is worth no where near $350. $20 to $30 would be more realistic. Again this advice is given without being able to see the coin, so take it for what it is worth.
I agree completely with @l.cutler. These off center strikes are not all that uncommon and routinely trade in the $10.00-$30.00 range.
Thank you for your reply. I'll try to upload pics. Yes, the obverse side has a hair inside the 2x2, I asked the guy if he wanted me to put it in a new 2x2, he declined! And then seemed bothered that I didn't want to cough up $350 plus $75, and a 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame US Half Dollar for this penny. What I did offer was $100 down, at which point I would have sent it to PCGS (I am going to join anyway) yesterday (Monday Jan 24.) And when I got it back I would give him half the value given by PCGS less the $100 down payment. And he knows me well enough to know I would 100% stand up to my word. And also if it turned out this coin isn't worth bubkiss, he would have to refund me the difference between the value and my deposit. I thought that to be very fair of a offer. Thank you again Jared
Nice error. The $10-$30 range seems correct. Yours may be on the lower end because it's only a partial date. It would recommend NOT sending it to PCGS. It will cost more to have it graded than it's worth. Only my opinion, but this sounds a lot more complicated than it needs to be. You have some good info on the approx. value. You might want to check ebay SOLD listings (not active listings), to see what people have paid for 60-70% off center cents. Remember, fully dated coins are worth more than ones missing the date
