I have two 1982 D pennies. I found a second one last night and compaired the two and they are different. What do you think?
Generally it isn't terribly productive to play "How are these two pictures different" because different people see different things. Tell us what you see and we'll see if it looks that way to us. BTW welcome to Coin Talk
They are both copper 1982 D pennies. I believe one is a small date and one is a large date also checking the word Liberty
They both definitely look like large dates to me. The second one maybe has a die chip on the 2. If you look up pictures of the small date you can see much more of a curve in the 2 right above the flat bottom. Once you find one that really is a small date you can use it as a guide and you'll know for sure if any other 82s you come across are large or small. If you're not sure, chances are it's large. You'll know a small for sure when you see it.
They are both large. The 2 in the small date is much more delicate and fully formed, the 2 in the large date is sloppy. Large on the left, small on the right.
Sry but those r large dates if u look up the small date 1982 the 1,8,2 will be even across the top and bottom perfectly.
You do realize that this thread is more than 4 years old, and the OP hasn't been heard from since, don't you? PS. Welcome to the neighborhood!
I'm generally good at spotting differences, but I don't see it. The only thing I see is a difference in sharpness of the strike. This happens with dies as they are used before being retired. It even happens with working hub dies before the first coin is struck as the working hub wears out. And this is before being circulated. Both the 2 and the 8 are different punches, but the 8 difference becomes difficult to see as the die wears. The top o of the 8 is ever so slightly smaller on the small date, but you need a sharp example to ID it.
Resource for 1982 Cent varieties http://lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1982.html The 1982-D small date copper find not mentioned above. https://www.numismaticnews.net/world-coins/rare-1982-d-small-date-copper-foundEdit That makes 8 production varieties and the 1982-S Proof in copper for a total of 9 total varieties for 1982. The ONLY "missing" varieties would be Proofs not Large Date Copper.
The person you quoted has not been on CoinTalk since September 2017 You can't see the difference? It is clear as day! Look at the picture in post #7 The large date is also closer to the rim than the small date! as explained in post #8
Don't look at the overall size of the top of the 8 look at the size of the INSIDE of the upper loop compared to the inside of the bottom loop. On the large date the inside of the two loops are just about the same size. on the small date the inside of the top loop is about half the size of the inside of the bottom loop. And that should stay consistent even with die wear or die polishing.
I was referring specifically to examples from worn dies. But you're the guy I would ask for small copper questions. You can see things I can't see on my best days, and those are getting rare. And CONDER has always been my go to guy for Early Copper. What I can't understand is how a 5 year old question made it to the top of the forum. I admit the microprint in low contrast with the time stamp is also impossible for me to see.
