Heya! I just recently bought the following and had some questions: 1982 P Souvenir Set 1982 D Souvenir Set 1983 P Souvenir Set 1983 D Souvenir Set They each came with a colored envelope (Denver - Blue, Philedelphia - Green) and the only identifying mark on each was: Philedelphia Souvenir Set or Denver Souvenir Set. Inside came with a cellophane containing 5 coins (Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half) and a mint medal. 1982 Sets: 1983 Sets: Total cost ended up being close to $250.00. There wasn't a C.O.A. and what you see in the picture above is what i received. I was curious if anyone here owned / researched these and could tell by the information provided / picture if they were authentic or not. I normally would expect a C.O.A. and at the very minimum inserts to the envelope for support so the contents aren't damaged. Considering the cost I was concerned if I was being duped or not. If there is any other information you may need or better pictures please post up and I will provide.
In 1982 & 1983 the mint did not issue mint sets. These souvenir sets are the only mint issued sets. And only available on a visit to the individual mints. (as I recall). They do look okay to my eye, but, hey, I wear glasses. But the price?????? Also, just a thought,if you were not sure, why did you part with your money? Better safe than sorry.
I just received them the other day. I still have 2 weeks to refund if i am not fully satisfied. Figured I would ask around to either find they were not what I expected or find out they were what I was after. I have had a heck of a time locating these sets, and usually you would have to buy 1 (P or D) and hope later on you could find the other mint's set. So basically I jumped when I found both years and both mints as a package deal. Also, I kind of took the risk that since they had 2 weeks refund policy I would find out if they were authentic or not.
The price seems right. My friend had a 82 or was it a 83 P & D set that he was selling for 100 dollars. That was 2 years ago. Lou
As Frank (Treasure Hunt) mentioned, the mint did not produce mint sets in 82 and 83 - for reasons that can be researched on line. During those years, "mint" sets were made by various private companies - including the mint itself. The sets that had the us mint medals in them were produced at the mint and sold as "souvinier" sets at the Denver and Philadelphia mint shops. These are the sets that you have and are the better of all the private mint sets of these years. They appear to be in excellent condition. Price is always an issue with these sets as I refuse to pay top dollar, but do own the 82 set. The 83 sets seems to command a higher price than the 82 and I refuse to pay it. Although your price appears a little high, you received some nice sets. The funny thing is, true us mint sets contain better struck coins than coins used for circulation and since mint set were not produced during these years, all you are purchasing are uncirculated coins made for circulation sealed in plastic wrap. So IMO, all you are doing is paying the premium for plastic wraps, blue envelopes and a mint medal, but that is why we are collectors!
those coins are ones that I want to get at least AU examples of, but always hesitate when I see the price. Always have other more shiny things to buy. I'm sure I'll regret it in a few years. Does anyone know what the math on these is. By that I mean, is there any kind of savings by buying the set as shown above as opposed to going out and finding the UNC examples? For example, I don't really give a toot about the penny or the half (from a collecting standpoint) and could live without those.
I have both the 82 and 83 sets and they are exactly like yours. Authentic mint issue from what I can see. I've watched the pricing on these off and on the last few years and they don't go down. Pretty limited supply, so hang on to them. I'm kind of a stickler for keeping things in the original government packaging, so I'd definitely leave them as is. And there weren't any COAs with any of them. Enjoy your sets.
ditto. These look exactly like mine. They seem to have nice coins in the as well. In the 1983 the quarters are of particular interest, gems are quite sought after. I am glad I got mine, too. They are the way I have a "complete" run of mint sets, 1965-date.
I recently purchased just the p and d dimes and quarters and had to hold my breath at the prices. You can find all you want in circulation, but of course they aren't uncirculated. I wondered at the response which said they wanted an AU example. I expect that after this long a time since 1982 and 1983, an AU example might be pretty rare.
Thanks for the responses! Good deal, I am glad several owners responded! I was really beginning to worry as no one anywhere I asked was answering about whether or not they had a COA, lol. Makes sense though from what jaceravone & treasurehunt mentioned:jaceravone: I guess I won't be returning these 4 sets with that information! The price may seemed a bit high, but with the time spent searching for them and also the fact it keeps rising... I had set this money aside particularly for running these down. I now have a complete 1965 - 2007 Uncirculated run with all the extras. Next goal is 1951 - 1964!!! :computer:
To the OP and to anyone not aware, the current red book value on all 4 of these sets is around $290 together. The '82 each at $60 each, the '83 P at $95 and the D at $75. These were souvenir sets and are more rare than the 3rd party packagers. You can consider the individual bronze mint medals with each as the COA since no 3rd party included these, only the mints did. Cheers, you made out only paying $250, the value should only increase over time.
I guess I missed this post first time through. There is a substantial premium for the sets. You could get the coins for less than $100 with a litytle effort. Quality of the sets is superior to roll quality but only a little so figure for $150 you could match the quality. The premiums are due to low mintages which are reported as 10,000 for the '82-P, 15,000 '83-P, and 20,000 for each of the Denvers. I'm not aware of any counterfeits to date but do exercise caution as time goes by. The pictured sets look fine. Oh! I probably avoided the thread first time because it's in the chat forum instead of the coin forum.
The mint did not start using COA's until the SOL sets in 1986. I think some of the mint sets and a few proof sets before that time had cards in them describing what the set was but not a true COA. The true COA's for the proof and mint sets didn't start until either 1987 or 88 I believe.
Your good with them sets the colors ENVELOPES are correct price is average... I have the same SETS since 1988 and never seen a COA IN ONE THESE SETS HAD TO BE BOUGHT AT THE MINTS WHEN YOU TOOK A TOUR OR VISITED THE DENVER MINT OR PHILI. MINT ONLY PLACE SOLD UNLESS SOMEONE BOUGHT A BUNCH AND SOLD THEM, BUT IN GIFT SHOP ONLY AND THERE IS A WRITE UP ON THEM ABOUT WHY WHAT AND WHERE ON 82' & 83' SOUVENIR SETS PRETTY COOL STORY. I'LL TRY AND PASTE THE LINK ON HERE FOR YOU..
JBSBURNS One please no shouting. All caps is shouting and it is rude unless you explain that it is done for a particular reason such as poor vision. Two, this is a 13 year old thread, and the OP you are responding to has not been here in 12 years.
