I picked this up at my local coin shop for a few bucks and thought it was kind of neat. I know this is a very common coin and errors on high mintage modern coins like this one are not that unusual. Im not expecting it to be valuable because of the error, just curious what the error may be... Maybe a capped die? Thank you!

Not an error. Probably heat damage. Someone may have taken a mini torch to this coin.

Please keep in mind the following two things.

Not everything that looks different, strange or weird on a coin automatically makes a mint error. There are many ways a coin can become damaged and altered after it leaves the US Mint.

And just because someone owns a Coin Shop doesn't mean that they know how to properly identify errors. Some have no clue and assume that some damaged coins are errors.

I also say applied heat damage caused the clad to blister up.

That makes perfect sense, that's why I posted here to find out because I just didn't know. To be honest, I feel a little embarrassed. The only reason I thought it was an error is because that was what I was told by the coin dealer that sold it to me. I only payed a few bucks for it so no big deal, not really big into error coins anyway... Thank you.

Don’t let one bad purchase keep you from exploring error coins. It’s really interesting in my opinion. Chances are it may have fooled the dealer. I’ve seen it happen.

It's just the price you pay for gaining experience. We have all been there.

You might however want to reconsider what you purchase at that shop based on recommendations from the owner...

Not saying there aren't things he knows about, but error coins are not them.

This is a great point. Most LCS folks know the key variety and error coins, but not uncommon errors or lesser known varieties. They may think they have something when they don’t.
