I'm still too new to remember all the terminologies so I'm not sure what this might be called. You'll see it in LIBERTY, the mm "D" looks filled and and on the 1 after 198. I can also see it on the N (in IN), the G & D in GOD, andthe R, S in TRUST. I'm going to guess it's doubling but with all the different terminologies, I get lost on them easily. Thanks for any comments/opinions!
Forgot to mention that I checked varietyvista and doubleddie listings and don't see a listing for 1981 D washington quarter.
All I see is circulation wear and tear. The D looks like it took a hit, not a Die Chip. There is doubling called Mechanical Doubling and Die Deterioration Doubling both cause either strike or worn Die Doubling. Nothing to do with Hub Doubling which causes a true Doubled Die strike.
Learn your terminology, learn how to grade. it'll help you a lot in identifying errors, etc. Also, always review PMD when you are reviewing any older coins and how it affects it visually.
The responses to the previous post said it wasn't an error. If you have a question, you should post a pic and start a new thread
I have the same on my 1981-D from my denver mint set. I do know how to grade andi can tell the difference between mechanical doubling and a double die and i have a double die in this one. Im sending it off to third party grading. I can tell you though just by looking at your coin and mine looks a lot alike and i will say they are a double dies but by a slim margin meaning ok it is a double die and it is not by much so send yours in for grading and if we are right when you get it back the double die will be named after you and will be on the display announcing that you have found a new error and also your name will probably be on the next Cherry Pickers guide pretty cool huh I wait to send mine off so you can send yours first you can become famous. Have a good day. Email me if you have any qustions.
Hello.. The correct numismatic terminology is actually Doubled Die.. not double die Big difference The original coin on this thread is not a Doubled Die. True Doubled Die fall in the category of Variety not Error
The sale site was probably etsy, they are clueless there or maybe nefarious. You will notice in the postings above if you look at the date of the post down under the text part, that the people who claimed it was have not come back to gloat, There is a reason for that, they decided it wasn't or they did submit it and it wasn't. The forum and members are not perfect, we have to look at photos ( usually not the best ) whereas a dealer gets to see it in person, so sometimes the forum gets it wrong, but we do not charge so take for free advice, but serious free advice. It takes time and learning to recognize the real from the not real mint error/variety. You can earn a lot by searching old threads. ..............If you go to the search box above ( top right) and type 1981 filled quarter and click you should see 2 pages of past responses. Just "filled mintmark", will get 198 posts. Jim
Hi. I'm attempting to post a couple of pics of this particular 1981 d quarter. I'm wondering if someone can tell if it might be a true error.
You may want to post a new thread rather than the end of an existing thread. You'll get more replies that way Also the light is directly above you putting the coin directly in your shadow. Try moving several feet to the side so the coin is in light. It's hard to see any details Also you're leaving us guessing to what specific area or part of the coin you think is an error without actuality stating it. So i only see a damaged rim
Google some professional error coin people and send them an e mail like I did to avoid negative comments before every opinion. As far as I know Debbie downer isn’t a real person so you don’t have to worry about accidentally clicking on her website while seeking advice. Good luck!
One well known error dealer will suggest that new collectors with basic questions post to CT when he is too busy to answer. He also helps answer questions occasionally on here (it's like getting an MIT professor helping you with your algebra homework) You have to remember the reason most of the responses are negative is that most new collectors post coins that are not errors, just damage. Would you feel better if they were told what they wanted to hear Rather than factual info? It sounds like you're suggesting new collectors don't post on CT. I think that's a ridiculous position. There are many people who truly enjoy helping new collectors.
