Hey ya'll! Let's get right to it...I have a regular ol nickel as far as my poor lil inexperienced eyes can see through the looking glass, except for that funny blob where the mint mark should be. Try as I might, i cant decipher what it is, or should be rather. So to the experts i go....lol. As you can see it is pretty scratched and weathered. Not expecting any big find here, but I just have to know what it is I'm looking at! Its driving me nuts! Thanks for you time and input...(this is by far my favorite coin forum btw...just thought I'd slip that in...)
The mint mark isn't strange. Look at the coin see how scratched and circulated it is? The mint mark is smashed from: 1. something striking it 2. heavy circulation 3. damage 4. all of the above. If that coin was in mint state and the mm looked like that, then it would be odd. But in this condition, I see that all the time.
I appreciate your reply, but I'm not convinced its damaged like you said. Its definatley not smashed. It kinda looks as if it was a drip...if that makes any sence. Its raised. Not scrapped up or over necessarily, but dripped almost. Could be a like a fold I suppose...ah...shoot...I'm gonna work on a better picture...but again, not expecting it to be something eventful, I really just want to know what mint it was, is, should be...lol
It's a beat up, modern, mass produced nickel. There is nothing special about the mint mark. Something cracked into it, another coin, something. It's worth 5 cents.
Also, looks like you’ve been here awhile but welcome to CoinTalk. Please know that when the responses you get are honest about what is there, it’s just that- honesty... conversely if you do end up finding something of value we’ll say so and rejoice with you.
Thank you sir. I believe you just might be the only one who actually read my post and I thank you fer your reply.
Hello again ya'll! Thanks again fer all your input. I do appreciate it. Honestly. With that said I feel as if I must address what seems to be a miscommunication, on my part naturally. As I said in my original post I had absolutely no presumption of discovery, made from grandeur or otherwise. I did appreciate the bluntness in the adjectives used whether the were neccessary or not. What stumped me on this coin is that I could not decipher what the mint mark was or intended to be. The title of my post is where I believe I went wrong. Using the word strange obviously implied a description I did not intend, although i must say that the mark that is currently there is still strange to me. If it was at the mint or thru circulation was a not my concern, I knew as many of you pointed out not of value other then its face. Also my response to the first reply I still stand by. The way he described what possible damage it could have received did not fit what I was looking at. It certainly was not smashed, the type of damage is still unclear, and if I had a magic wand I just might find he was correct and eat my words...lol. anyways, this is getting to winded..So I leave you with this: i promise to be more clear I the future on what it is I'm asking and limit my vocabulary to fit a more mainstream definition. Thank you again fer your time and efforts in helping me thru this crazy quest of finding a piece of history...your still my favorite forum and I do apologize if I ruffled any feathers. I bid you all a good day.
It seems to almost take the shape.of an s but now that I think about it Frisco stopped making circulated coins at some point....not sure this was befor or after...anyways, I'm kinda over it now..lol. I just wish I could have taken a better pic...
There may be a small die chip on the mintmark in addition to the wear and tear. This would account for it being somewhat raised.
I'm new to this...can anyone help with the "chicken scratches" on this 1980-P sleeve I just purchased?
907Novice, you should start your own thread not "high jack" someone else's. If you are inquiring about the notes on the flip, post under "coin chat".
@907Novice, welcome to CT! FYI, with your question here, you "highjacked" this thread . Now that's not a great sin, but you should start your own thread if you want the maximum (optimum) response, since many members are likely to skip this OP, so not even see your question.
