    Hi guys,

I have this 1980 D Washington Quarter and noticed that on the both Obverse and Reverse that it is gold toned. The rim is normal color with silver and copper. Not sure what this is. Can someone please explain?

I think if you heat it with certain gases the clad changes color. Someone did an experiment with it.

By the looks of the copper showing on the edge of the coin I agree with paddyman98, it's had some heat.

I made mine in a "dry" cast iron skillet on a controllable cast iron hot plate.
An old CPU heat sink works for cooling the coins down. I use a flat wood spoon to hold and move the coins while hot. Not all coins turn one solid color, it's a hit and miss sometimes.

I do not recommend trying this at home!

Another technic I've seen on youtube is heating up a quarter and then dropping it in automobile anti-freeze to cool it down. Turns it gold from what I saw.

Sometimes, coins just tone that way. This has had no treatments, no experiments done to it

I think I got one of your heat treated coins in a roll from the bank one time. Does this look like the same color?

No it doesn't look like the same color. Your quarter is much more gold.

it's not dipped or coated either because I have some coins that are and they look polished this quarter does not look polished or coated i actually think that's why we put in flip but i didn't remember it being this toned. image.jpg

Sometimes I wonder if it's these flips . Isn't that centavos suppose to be silver and I can see where it's looking kinda gold

in comparison to a canadian dollar that is bronze it is just a little darker in color not by much though. I guess what we should be asking is- What year did you start frying quarters in a frying pan and approx. How many of these can we expect to surface in the future?? And third ?? is--- can you stop frying them now so that we have RARE mint error coins with low mintage?? lol

ED. Meaning environmental damage. The coin came in contact with something that changed the color. NAV, no added value, but sure draws one's attention.

Nice photos by the way. Thank you.

the coin has great eye appeal Im pretty sure we pulled that out of off a roll that came off brinks truck to the bank because we use to buy 40 worth at least every week. My husband liked putting together statehood albums with nearv uncirculated coins and that's the way he did . but pretty cool . I like chewing on coins back and forth there is a wealth of information and coin talk can be never ending and hear something new all the time. So i'm gonna leave you with this, as old as i am and as many coin collections we have had - not making me even close to a professional let alone a expert- this kid on a site this week accuse me of selling fake mercury dimes . Now he was interested until he saw the W mint mark and that mint didn't start till whenever 80s or whatever and so he didn't know what I had there but they were certainly fake. So if course I didnt remember designers name off the top of my head I probably will now, but when i did search first thing ncgs say most newbies do think that the W is a mint mark. lol I tried to send him there to learn something but he was to busy on my counterfeit dimes.i finally asked the little shit I said are you 13 and you got a dime in your hand and you know it all now lol. Anyway I told him if he didn't go read the site and if he didn't choose to educate himself before he opened his mouth and looked a fool, then no one else was going to educate him either and he would be dumb as a box of rocks for the rest of his life. yea i know kind a harsh but he got the point I guess he went and read the site he came back feeling a fool and apologies.
So there my funny paper for the week and Im sorry mod it's probably in the wrong forum, it's very confusing to me too find different tabs different conversations but that is because Im sight impaired so sometimes it's easier for me to stay in the same room so I don't get lost. Now if there is a forum for that let me know Ill me happy to move, I do enjoy talking coins and I really love silver, very nice silver coins. And of course beer :)

well can someone have that many natural toned morgan's i mean out of my collection i was lucky to have one two well i was trying to show an example but it's having me up on the pic also like when I was first having trouble so Ill just save it for another day. You guys got really good eyes . I watch many occasion something gets posted and you know what it is right off the bat. i need to find my good camera sometime it could spot something on a coin that with just my eye i couldn't see and that's really frustrating sometimes. Any way off for good night everybody!! Good talking:)
