Any idea what could cause this? Is there a legitimate explanation as to why or how this could happen? Is this common? Thanks!
Looks like a fairly hard tool hit and they packaged it anyway. This would be an appropriate time to feel like slapping someone.
That one won't $cha-ching$. It did not happen during the striking process. The coin was damaged after the fact. Otherwise, any con-artist could take a coin out of the plastic holder, damage it; then put it back in and sell it as an error. No dealer will touch it or grading company grade it. Yankee42 and SuperDave have the proper answer for it. The entire set should have been returned for credit or replacement.
Got it. I stand corrected. I'm thinking if it came from the mint in a sealed plastic holder it was a mint error. I didn't even consider the "con-artist" angle. Never mind. Thanks for the reality check. Looks like I got ripped off by the mint....again!
So I guess this is kinda the same thing.......right? https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1985-mint-set-damaged-during-production.273266/#post-2321015
