has anyone ever seen a date with two different style 7's in it? one has a curved back and the other straight.
I haven't studied 1977 cents, I would need to see an example of a normal 77 cent next to it. Since all the dies come from the same master hub, all the cents would have the same shaped digits. If the original hub had two 7's withht e exact same shape then a cent with thwo different 7's would be impossible
I think that during the hubbing process , as well as during strikings, the dies could expand ( by pressure) slightly from the center towards the outside, and this could change the shape of the outermost "7". This is assuming that the master die had 2 "7"s that were engraved the same to start .
I find this very interesting. Having a printing background, I think they should have used the same font for both 7's. Can someone explain why the mints would have different styles (fonts) for the 7's? It looks like there are 3 types of 7's used for the 70's pennies. A shorter 7 was used in the early 70's followed by the longer 7 in '73/'74 and then the "peg leg" 7 in the '77 series.
I think the dates are punched in the master hub with a gang punch. If that's the case they would have had to use two separate "7" punches. They were a slightly different font. Good eye Tiger!
Sounds to me like its a keeper. Don't know what a value would maybe only a penny. But it's a cool find I would save.
How about trying that overlay experiment on the enlargements in post #5 that I took from my Mint Set coins since they appear to be the same as the OP's? Thanks! Chris
Denver post I took your first image to overlay, I believe to be from Denver mint... only very slight difference.
Yeah but there is a definite difference between the two, font wise. You can see on cpm9ball's pics as well. I don't know how common this is but it did catch my eye.
I read desertgem's reply, and it makes complete sense but it lust seems like alot of metal to move. I'm still learning alot so this is another lesson .
We have seen photos of the slight difference in the two sevens. Does Anyone have photographic examples of straight bar "77's"? Or do they even exist?
