  1. My wife and i found a silver 1976 lincoln memorial penny in a roll from the bank last night. I have never seen one and was wondering if anyone had an idea of what it was and what its worth. I also have a 1908 s indian. The silver penny doesnt have a mint mark or the imprinted liberty bell like a couple i saw that were probably fakes. Im really curious. Does anyone know what the indian is worth. Please contact me by PM with any information please. Thank you

We see silver cents posted here regularily and they're always either plated or the result of a science experiment. The best first test is to weigh it. You'll need a scale that's accurate in grams to two decimal places. If you don't have access to one, see if a coin or jewelery shop would weigh it for you. I wouldn't make a special trip to have it checked out though, it would probably be a waste of gas.
The IH looks nice from what I can see. A larger pic would help. Also the mods frown on trying to sell coins on any forums other than the for sale forum.

The 1908-S is about a $100 coin if real. There are fakes out there. Better images would help. The Lincoln is almost for sure plated.

I see you listed the 1908-S for sale. You really need to be sure it is real first.
I'm sure you don't wish to stick someone with a fake.

LOL, those images with the thumbnail navigation bar across the bottom had me all confused. :)

The 1976 looks plated to me because of its "smooth" appearance. It's very shiny, like a mirror. It doesn't appear to have what collectors call "luster", where the surfaces reflect light differently when it comes from different directions. It also looks like the details are sort of smoothed out, which happens with plating.

There was a previous thread on what was assumed to be an aluminum penny, turned out to be plated also. High school chemistry classes had a lab experiment in the lab manual on plating back then. We plated in copper, the "aluminum post" ended up being plated with nickel (and was magnetic as a result), silver plating is also possible but likely would have tarnished. Check it with a magnet.

  18. Thanks everybody. The 1908 is real i had somebody check it out. I just didnt have any idea about the 76. The guy that checked the 08 out said it was real but only offered me 25 so i was trying to get an idea of what its worth from everyone else. Thanks for the help

There's no question it's plated. It looks like the plated steel cents. Scratch it and reveal the copper. You can always re-plate it to cover up the scratch.

  20. IF its plated i dont really want it. Is it worth anything as a novelty
