Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm sorry for your loss. It's possible that your father was saving pennies dated 1982 and earlier because he may have read somewhere that they might be worth more than their face value because of their copper content. Beginning sometime in mid-1982, the Mint changed from 95% copper to 95% zinc, and the Zincolns are nothing but crap. Unfortunately, the information posted over the last 10 years or so in various places on the internet about copper pennies being worth more than their face value is garbage. These coins are not "Grade A Copper". They are an alloy, and as such, are worth less than their face value to reclamation centers. You'd be lucky to get 25% of the value for Grade A Copper for these coins. However, it is still illegal to melt pennies, so all of this conjecture about their true value is a waste of time. I just thought you'd like to know. Chris
