1974 Quarter weight

    Hello.. I'm new at this.. I have a 1974 Quarter that weighs 5.5 grams.. Can someone tell me what's wrong here.. I read it should weigh 4.9 grams.. CM200827-104258008.jpg CM200827-104244006.jpg CM200827-104230004.jpg

    Should be around 5.67 grams

    It looks normal so you may want to check your scale for accuracy. It could be a think planchet and that would add weight but not enough to increase its value. Welcome to CT.

    It is supposed to weigh 5.67 grams. 5.56 is well within tolerance, and it appears to
    have lost a fraction of that weight due to severe circulation.
    Silver quarters weigh 6.25 grams.

    That's incorrect. Weigh a bunch of quarters and you will see they will be almost the same.. +/- a few grams.

    Okay.. Thanks for the info.. I looked it up and for some reason it told me 4.9 grams.. it's got a bunch of Nick's on the rim, so I thought I had something.. lol.. TY

    @Candice Wise If you're interested in coins, you should buy this book. A new edition comes out every year. It's primarily a price guide, which isn't the most up to date, but you can easily figure out if something is common or a better date. It also has info like weights, compositions, mintmark locations, mintages, a basic grading guide, and some historical in for all US coins. I'm willing to bet that just about every experienced collector on this site has at least 1 on their book shelf. It will be the best $10-$15 you'll ever spend on the hobby.

    4.9 grams would be closer to the standard for 5 cent pieces 5 grams +/- .194 grams
