Was pleasantly surprised to find this one yesterday in change that was given to me by a vending machine. It's a 1974 Quarter, but it looks to be struck on the wrong planchet. Not sure of much more than that. I have a comparison photo of another 1974 Quarter to compare it to but in that quarter George Washington looks like he has a Mohawk...hmmm.
It’s damaged. There is a process in which you take a spoon and tap the rim until it’s smooth like yours. The center is then cut or drilled out and smoothed to make a ring. It’s known as spooning.
It's called a "dryer coin." A coin is stuck in something that rotates like a clothes dryer, which rubs off the rim and thickens it. It can also be a result of someone "spooning" the coin. Either way, it's damage and not an error.
Your fortune will have to wait awhile. I'm next or maybe after that but I'm sure I'm ahead of you. Be patient, it will happen. Thanks for sharing.
Patience has never been a virtue of mine, but I'll bite my lip and wait I suppose. lol More to share later.
Thank you. I joined in 2021, but have been in hiding for a long while. I love learning about these wonderful pieces of history. And I appreciate everyone's help.
If raised it may be a die crack. It looks the size of a coin rolling machine. They cut into the surface of a coin but it becomes raised on the outside edges of the cut.
That photo makes me think it’s been damaged by a coin rolling machine and has a lot of circulation wear afterwords.
I will take that explanation. I can't find another quarter that has that same look or is close to it. Just a unique damaged design. He is now forever my Mohawk Washington Quarter. He's too cool looking to give up.
I don’t have photos but when a coin rolling machine is adjusted too tight it always scrapes the coin. Sometimes it will make a complete circle. In the future you’ll find coins and then you’ll know what I’m saying.
