There is no small/large date varieties for 1972. If you are seeing a difference in the dates it is probably due to the fact that there was a doubled master hub this year and about half of the 72's for all mints show minor doubling on the date and LIBERTY.

Jesse please get some books to help you.

The Authoritive Reference of Lincoln Cents, Wexler.
    The Cherry Pickers Guide, Fivas/Stanton.
    The Error Coin Encyclopedea, Margolis.

There are many others but those would make invaluble for you.

I know it can be tough depending on the camera you have, but I think we'll need pics of the date that are very crisp focus-wise and more closely cropped in order to see what you are seeing.

I know this might be a dumb question, but, could it be a copy or fake? have you weight it? And if nothing else, send it in and have it graded

I even tried overlaying the dates and could not tell any differences. You have get your pictures in focus.

sorry guys i try lol i do need a better camera.what im seein is the 1972 s on the left the one in the date is in a slightly different spot.the nine is hooked like a 1970s small date and longer loop in the 9 also the 7 is a lot shorter and the top of the 7 has different shapeit shorter also and the mark that goes across the 7 in the crease on the left it does not have one .other 72 has the crease.then the 2 its longer and look at the botton on the left pic.the curve in the lower 2 is not like that on anyother 72 i have looked at.o one more thing to look at look at the 7 on the right of the pic.see its bottom position to the 2?then look at the left pic and look at the bottom of the 7 to the 2 see how its extremely shorter?aslo the 2 is higher than the 7 on the left all other 72s are almost even

The differences you see are most likely due to die wear.

    Jesse-

Take a look at the photo on this thread. If it's the hub doubled variety you should also see that doubled spike of the tail of the two.

You might have to rotate it around in some good light to do so.
