Proof coin from this year are quite distinct, and easily recognizable from their circulation strike counterparts. A proof coin should have sharp square edge rim.

How about proofs that have been in circulation for many years? Being in circulation would put lots of wear & tear on them which would remove a lot, if not all of the sharp characteristics of the coin.

All 1971 Proof Coins were minted in San Francisco and bear an S mint mark.

This coin does not have a mint mark, and was struck in Philadelphia.

Therefore it is not a proof.

It’s a long distance between that coin and a proof one.

hey mike can you explain to me why where san Francisco minted cents circulated during the 1970s to 1979s , i mean why, why they did not bear a more prominent feature. because it seems to be the only series where sanfrancisco minted coins where readily available outside of silver coinage

San Francisco filled in for production when the other Mints couldn't keep up. S Mint cents were made from 1968-1974. The only other circulation strike S Minted coins in the 70s were Susan B Anthony Dollars in 1979.

There are proofs without mint marks. See 1990 no S proof cent, 1968 no S proof dime, etc.

Proof is a manor of manufacture, not from a place.

You can still see proof characteristics. I’ve seen proofs grade as low as PR06.

a method of manufacturing... yes. I f you knew proofs, you'd know that this is not pretty much instantly
