Good evening, Folks, I just found this forum, but I started collecting coppers about 10 years ago. One coin in my collection that I have not been able to find out about is a 1970D Lincoln penny that has an interesting error. The penny is in very nice shape (though never graded) It is red with some browning, but all the details are very clear. The only thing missing is the "In" . "God We Trust" is very clear, but there is no sign that "In" ever existed. I feel certain that it was a filled die, but again, that is just speculation. Has anyone come across this error before where the one word only was missing in an otherwise clear coin... Also, if there is a guess as to the value. I have never had coins graded, so I am not even certain who to contact to get a value as to grade. Anyway, I would appreciate any insite here. Thanks. Hi Stevegoad Check out this thread Started by me, for the very same thing different date. You are correct in that it is most likely a filled die error. really a pretty common thing and adds no value. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=3923 Rick
It is most definitely a filled die error.Sometimes,a letter or two is mistakenly omitted,& the die passes the inspection process through an oversight.
<Sometimes,a letter or two is mistakenly omitted,& the die passes the inspection process through an oversight.> Very unlikely on a modern die. Since the entire die is sunk at the same time by the use of a hub. If a die was missing because of an error in the hub, all of the dies made from that hub would be missing the error and huge numbers of such coins would be known.
I'm new here but...yes, I have a 1999 Delaware quarter that has the E missing in STATE and it just reads STAT. If you go to coin world you can read more on how that happens or just a search on it.
I have a 1970 D penny that is missing The letter “I” in the sentence “ in God we trust” also in “liberty” the “L” is spaced far from the “I”. (L iberty) and the “y” looks funny also. Lincoln ear looks weird and his chest is real faint? hardly visible. It’s not in the best condition. Still there is no value to this guy? I have a bunch of 1970s and never seen one like this!

I have a brown 1970 no mint mark that's missing the IN and the letter G in AU condition. Also look for the 1970 P Lincolns, it has the same issues.
