I have a couple pennies from 1970 that still look pretty shiny. Would it be worth it to have these graded? Attached are some images as well as a brown well circulated one for comparison. I would appreciate your thoughts?
On edit: if you find one that has no hint of a visible mark on it; no spots, no nicks, THEN it's also a maybe.
better pics of the middle one, it may be a small date. the railroad rim is a common issue, adds minimum value.
These kinds of raised rims were quite common in the early 1970's. I've heard it described as a "weak collar" and other names, such as slightly misaligned dies. I think "weak collar" is more descriptive.
Don’t dare spend it. It’s the start of your rim error collection. Keep on hunting. Remember you’ll never find anything if you don’t look. I can feel more errors in your future. Search you must young coin Jedi.
Just to be clear, while technically, these are mint errors, they really carry no extra value. There is no reason to keep them if you're expecting them to go up in value. When 352sdeer says "don't dare spend them", I think he means that keeping the coins can be the start of a collection. If this leads to you Searching for more errors, learning about the minting process, and gets you into numismatics as a hobby, then the value of these coins are priceless
To the Hobbist price only matters if your collecting to sell. And I don’t sell usually I keep um, smash the bad ones into elongated memories and keep um, give them to people and let them keep um. The bad ones I put in rolls and keep um. See MY TREND HERE. For me the value is in my love for the coin. I keep what makes ME happy not what makes the most money for me. Now please don’t be offended by this it’s just my way because when I started there wasn’t the internet to sell on or get ripped off on I should say. You just got ripped off at shows and by your local dealers. So I never sold only ever traded. It feels better when you do a bad trade than when you BUY bunk coin.
I'm far from a beginner, but I collect the way @352sdeer does. I VERY seldom sell anything ... yet. When I retire from active employment, I'll supplement my income by selling some stuff. Pension, Soc Sec, and coin sales.
Almost forgot that 1970S is a large date. Keep it out and handy when your hunting as a comparison coin when you are looking for small date 1970S coins. It will be obvious when you find a small date you’ll know it.
You don’t count Kurt. We both started about the same time probably but I’ve always been a Lincoln groper in the dark. You on the other hand are at the top of the pile as far as numismatist go. Us dirty un washed minions exspect you to have plenty of nice stuff we always long to get our hands on. Now to hear you might sell some is both sad and exciting! Keep me in the loop I do 1909 to 1982 copper that’s it. Info for everyone: I know I’m new and you wonder why I’m here so much now. I just retired the beginning of November. I cyber stalked a couple of sites and I picked this one earlier this week. To bad your stuck with me now
