Greetings everyone read a little bit about the 1968 s Lincoln cent. What's all the hype about it is it something about the mintage 3 million I could have read it wrong . I do forget a lot I know conditions got everything to do with it. But I was concentrating on the mint mark that s definitely looks like it's over something I can't find it. on the right side of the s and you can see a vertical bar could that be the bottom of a d? What about the l on the rim I read online and It could have been fleabay , it raise the value. So I said I'm going straight to the horse's mouth and here I am what's the true story of the 1968 s Lincoln cent IMG_20230904_133344012.jpg IMG_20230904_132149977.jpg IMG_20230904_132036346.jpg

The lettering becoming attached to the rim is nothing but old dies. The cents dated 1968 were the last ones coined with obverse dies derived from the original master hub. Though it had been modified in 1915-16, this master hub was essentially the same one adopted in 1909. After 60 years of generating master dies it had become severely worn, the lettering being drawn to the edge, and Lincoln's portrait being grossly malformed and nearly featureless. Beware what you read on things like ebay..

It was minted by a worn die and only worth face value as stated.

The 1968-S cents was hoarded partly/mostly due to the return of the "S" mintmark
    on the cent.
It was a low mintage coin, comparatively to other cents at the time.
In the 70's it was like the hardest cent for this YN east coast collector to find.
Now that most of those hoarders have pasted, on their collections they are easy to acquire in higher grades by the roll. Any "hype" these coins had, has long since faded away with those hoarders. JMO.

I was one of the S-mint Lincoln Memorial cent hoarders in the early '70s. I dumped 'em all back into circulation about 15 years ago.

Too many were minted so not worth the trouble.

For what? They're all worth one cent each. No more, no less.

Think of it as kind of a general thank you to all the hoarders. The low value makes them more economical to study and play with.

The ‘68-S is one of the harder finds in circulation, from my experience.
