It looks like it might have been dipped in acid to remove the outside layer of nickel.

Looks like the clad is missing to me as well. is there any pitting on the coin? Does look like an acid job, just curious as to what they could of used if there is no pitting.

It looks like a normal dime that's stained a copper color. I find these periodically in pocket change.

I hate to keep harping on this, but have you weighed it?

If it is substantially lighter than 2.5 grams, it could be a missing clad layer(s) piece. Of course, it could also be an acid job, or something similar, so further testing/analysis would be called for.

On the other hand, if it is approximately 2.5 grams, then it is almost certainly a victim of post-mint staining.

    Hi,
I agree with Mr. Diamond's view. This is just a coin that has picked up some color in one of many ways. I have found many that were at one time buried and uncovered while metal detecting that look like this.

What about the weight - it's 2.21 grams. A normal dime should be 2.5 grams.

A silver dime weighs 2.5 grams. A clad dime weighs around 2.28 grams. The weight of your coin falls within the normal range of variation for clad dimes.

I have dozens of dimes that look just like this that I dug with my detector last year if anyone wants any.
