i have a 1968 D Kennedy half dollar that weighs properly but has absolutely no copper band around the edge and was wondering if this is common.
i dont have another one from this era and cant find any good pictures of any to compare it to

Yeah you'll see them with no copper band showing, or with it showing. Or if it's circulated some, it could have blackish edges. They come all ways.

    I wouldn't say thats uncommon on 40%ers.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

The 1965-1970 Kennedy's were struck in 40% silver clad. You won't see a copper core on the edge. It looks more silver-to-grayish.

Well, sometimes you will see a copper band around the edge. This is only if they're higher grade and haven't had much handling. But, it could go either way.
Here's a somewhat lousy picture, but it's all I've got. You can sort of see the different edges:

I should have made it clear that I was talking about circulated coins. My faux pas!

Do you know why a 1968 would weigh 12.1 or is that normal.. I thought the weight was supposed to be 11.5

Check your scale for calibration. ;)

An easy way to calibrate and always have something/remember the amount is to weigh out a nickel. Will weigh out to 5 grams for 1 nickel, and a nickel is obviously worth 5 cents, so you can't forget.

Here's a selection of 40% rims. Occasionally they will have none of the 79% Cu core showing. When the core is showing, it will start out as a light yellow to light orange color, then with wear will move towards a greyish color very similar to the 80% Ag jacket, then will darken to a muddy black.
